Hotel Perk: a functionalist masterpiece reborn

This hospitality interior features a contemporary look, showcasing multiple pieces from BROKIS, a renowned Czech lighting brand which is upholding a strong glassmaking tradition.

Hotel Perk is a beacon of functionalist design in the northeast of the Czech Republic.

Nestled in the former industrial town of Šumperk, in the northeast of the Czech Republic, Hotel Perk is a testament to functionalist design. It features many pieces from BROKIS, a renowned Czech premium lighting producer. BROKIS was founded by Czech entrepreneur and engineer Jan Rabell in 2006, having acquired the Janštejn Glassworks nearly ten years earlier. He restored the factory to its former glory, ensuring the Bohemian glassmaking tradition continues into the 21st century.

The Prisma collection features an extravagant metal fixtures paired with handblown glass spheres.

Hotel Perk’s contemporary interior was designed by BROKIS art director Lucie Koldova. Her design ethos is centred around people’s relationships to objects and here she has created a playscape of lighting and subtle shadows that accentuate the building’s geometric purity. In the hotel’s restaurant, BROKIS’s Prisma collection takes centre stage, with stunning compositions that serve as both functional lighting and stunning art pieces. The hallmark of the collection is its extravagant metal fixture which is paired with classic handblown glass spheres.

The Orbis collection has handblown glass and sleek metal fixtures, adding a touch of geometric purity to the hotel’s interior.

The main stairway of Hotel Perk features an attractive pinkish-grey stucco finish complemented by Orbis and Sfera collections from BROKIS. The Orbis collection features handblown glass abruptly severed at the top to accommodate a sleek, multi-angular metal fixture. The result is a minimalist yet richly ambient light, ideal for creating a sophisticated atmosphere. The defining characteristic of the Sfera collection, meanwhile, is a clean cut finish across the top of the glass, creating a platform for a decagonal metal fixture. The Sfera lights cast a gentle, ambient light through handblown matte opal glass.

The Overlay collection (pictured on the wall) features glass tubes which can be either matte or transparent.

The building’s clean lines are emphasised by the Overlay collection. The design has a modern yet timeless appeal and features concrete fixture embedded with shards of upcycled glass. Cradled within the concrete fixture is a delicate sleeve of either frosted or clear glass. This tube of light appears to levitate within the structure.

Hotel Perk blends modern design by Lucie Koldova and the historical glassmaking tradition upheld by BROKIS.

With its carefully curated interiors and exquisite lighting Hotel Perk perfectly combines modern design and historical preservation, making it a must-visit destination for design lovers.
