Design Meets Dynamic Coworking at Silversquar

A trailblazing coworking space in the heart of Liège harnesses the creative talent of fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard who employed a global yet local approach.

Silversquare Guillemins, designed by Jean-Paul Lespagnard, is a vibrant hub in Liege and, with its quirky feel and nods to residential interiors, is set to revolutionise the coworking scene in Belgium.

The project can be found in a leafy neighbourhood with homes, offices, a boutique hotel and local shops nearby and is part of the 'Paradis Express' project developed by Befimmo, a Belgian property management company. It spans 3,283 m² over three floors, featuring 74 private offices and 248 customisable workspaces and is the culmination of a three year journey for Jean-Paul Lespagnard, a Liege native who has a background in fashion. He left his hometown to pursue his career with the likes of international creatives Anna Sui in New York and Meg Stuart in Berlin.

Lespagnard’s keen eye for detail, innovative use of space, and bold colour choices have brought a refreshing perspective to the world of coworking. This is not just a place for the 9-5 but a vibrant, inspiring environment where creativity and productivity thrive, with a home-from-home ambience. He has drawn both on his Belgian heritage and international creative experiences to design a space that feels both local and global. "The location between Liège-Guillemins station and La Boverie museum serves as a link between transport and heritage, catering to both locals and international visitors,” he explains.

The international and local influences can be seen throughout the space, from handcrafted tableware by artisans from Puebla and Jalisco in Mexico to straw lamps from a cooperative in the High Atlas in Morocco: every detail tells a story. Even the playful Tchantchèt doll designed by coppersmith Pascal Jacques from Liège and waffle-shaped door handles made in Faridabad (India) bring a whimsical, local flavour to the space. His collaborations with artists and craftsmen from around the world add eclectic touches to the space, making this a truly one-of-a-kind place to work.

Silversquare Guillemins offers a real sense of community, as well as a workspace. The project features upcycled lockers that double up as portable storage units as well as side tables, and seating which provide a range of workspaces, promoting interaction and collaboration. A glass wall, meanwhile, denotes a playful space intended for relaxing and socialising. The space also has a 'Chai Lobby', intended as a cosy and flexible waiting area where train departure times are displayed on screens and snacks are available, thus providing an attractive alternative to the waiting times in the station.

At the time of opening, the Liege site represented an important step for Silversquare, being the first location outside Brussels. “The collaborations we have set up with each of the artists allow us to create locations that are as surprising as they are unique. They are an integral part of Silversquare's DNA. Jean-Paul took up the challenge and met it with gusto. The spaces look dynamic and inspiring,” says Alexandre Ponchon, Silversquare co-founder.

Summing up the space, Jean-Paul Lespagnard says, “My travels and my origins clearly form the basis for my inspiration and for this project.”
